I decided to look at other articles that I find overall successful.  The single page below is from 'Vice' magazine which I really admire for their simple cool and still interesting layouts merged with usually fashionable/ 'hipster' photography or quirky illustrations.

The article below caught my eye because of the use of contrasting colours in the title.  As the double page spread I have been looking at is mostly dull muted colours I thought this might help to spice it up.

The article below is from 'Oh Comely' Magazine, another design driven magazine which uses the most basic of layouts.  Below it is structured into two columns and the text is very simple but I think this makes it very effective.  Also this magazine is printed on a matte stock which gives it a really nice finish, I will consider this when printing my final design.
