Handmade Paper Experiment

As I intend to have handmade paper in my publication I have had a go at making my own, it was quite successful for a first attempt :)

To begin I tore up lots of old paper I had lying around:

I then mixed it with boiling water and let it soak for a while and then put it through my smoothie maker with food colouring.

I then scooped the mush onto my homemade sieve kind of mechanism which I remember doing in Brownies when I was younger (haha).  Then transferred the mush onto dry newspaper to let it absorb all the water and dry out over night.  To help dry it out quicker, I covered the paper with a clean and dry tea towel and ironed it.  This helped to make the paper thin and flat.

COP // Hippie Publication // Design Sheets

My plan is to create an informative booklet identifying how the hippie subculture affected culture and I shall mostly be concentrating on visual culture.  I want to include information about:

  • Major Events (timeline)
  • Sexual Revolution
  • Vietnam War leading to LSD and then to Psychedelic Art
  • Family Dog Posters
  • Make Love Not War (Peaceful Protesting)
  • Fight for Equality "Brotherhood among all people of all races and all ethnicity"
  • Technology and how it affected art
  • Fashion

Below is my rough layout sketches to help guide me through the designing of my publication.

You can see below where I hope to have fabric inserts to make the publication more interactive, I intend to use denim, tie dye, and paisley.

Hippie // COP Publication // Experiments

Below are some experiments which I carried out after feeling inspired from seeing some similar typography in the book 'Hippie' by Miles which I got from the library.  I just wanted to practice this typical typographical style of the time.

  • The ATM invented.
  • The bar-code scanner is invented.
At some point I shall also discuss the war in Vietnam.  Bring the point back round to 'make love not war' a statement that is still used today, mostly in fashion.

http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/1960s.html

  • The 60's were a decade once again dominated by a war ( VIETNAM )not a world war but the effects were still felt throughout the world. It is also the start of showing how the people can effect politics through the power of "peaceful" demonstrations , students were the driving force because with education comes empowerment and with empowerment comes a voice , and in the 60's students learnt how to use that voice.
  • In the West although politicians would have liked to stopped demonstrations ( and tried ) against their policies, due to "freedom of speech" it was not possible
  • Many of the conflicts during the 60's could be considered to be part of the ongoing cold war between the East and the West ( Communism -- Capitalism ) , but due to the Nuclear Capabilities of both sides nether wanted to start a full scale war as they realized there could be no winner but both believed their ideology was best, they tried in other ways to influence the politics throughout the world.

Family Dog Posters Research

In my essay I shall be referring to a family dog poster and have found a website which has the full range from 1 - 147.

TThe Family Dog Numbered Series includes 147 numbered posters that advertised Family Dog shows—primarily at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco—from 1966 to 1968. There are also numbered posters for shows produced by the Family Dog in Denver and Portland, as well as unnumbered posters and handbills associated with shows produced by the Family Dog in San Francisco in 1969 and 1970. The Family Dog Numbered Series includes Mouse & Kelley's “Zig-Zag” Man (FD-14), and their “Skull & Roses” Grateful Dead poster (FD-26). The Series also contains Rick Griffin’s FD-D18 poster for the Doors’ 1967 New Year’s show in Denver. The Family Dog Series includes both posters and handbills. Later in the Series, there were postcards and image tickets.

Family Dog was the production company run by Chet Helms. In April 1966, Helms began presenting weekly events at the Avalon Ballroom, an old dancehall that was ideal for the spectacular light shows he was known for staging. Helm’s first Avalon concert featured The Blues Project and Great Society (FD-5 Wes Wilson). In June 1966, Stanley Mouse returned from Detroit and joined the FD poster design team, which was led by Family Dog Collective co-founder and poster artist Alton Kelley. Together they created a series of psychedelic posters that energized San Francisco’s developing counterculture. In October, Mouse and Kelley were in full swing at the Mouse Studio’s firehouse when Victor Moscoso returned to the fold to design FD-32.

The Family Dog Series is numbered from FD-1 to FD-147, and includes a number of posters from 1601 West Evans, Denver, CO that carry the designation FD-D2 and so on. Like early BG posters, the first Family Dog posters were printed on vellum and were subject to damage and wear. Family Dog numbers from 1 to 41 were printed in two forms—posters and handbills. After number 41, the handbills were replaced with postcards. The early FD handbills are extremely rare and seldom seen. Like the BG Series, there are many different printings (first prints, second prints, etc.) of the early posters. At Classic Posters, we guarantee that every Family Dog poster we sell is correctly attributed according to the current edition of The Collectors Guide to Psychedelic Rock Concert Posters, Postcards and Handbills 1965-1973 by Eric King

Charity Bunting // Buntathon

Eat cake, drink tea and learn to make bunting FOR CHARITY: #epicwin

Bizarrely, if you don’t think bright red fake plastic noses (this year, with legs and pointy teeth) are the ‘it’ accessory for spring, BUT still want to raise money for Red Nose Day, don’t despair…

Sewing machines, pins etc provided, unless you want to bring your own.

Sewing machines, pins etc provided, unless you want to bring your own.

…Sew in Brighton have a fun way to raise money.
No, really, it’s actually fun. And I don’t mean sitting in a bath of baked beans fun, or running 12 miles blisteringly fun, I mean actually FUN.

They are holding a Buntathon (Bunting Marathon, gettit?) on Saturday 16th, 12pm – 4pm – which is essentially lots of friendly types having a giggle whilst sewing bunting, drinking rosehip tea and (probably) nibbling cake.

Participants simply pay £2 to participate, with the money going to Red Nose Day. What’s extra super lovely is that the finished bunting will be donated to The Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton – kill two birds with one stone (or maybe heal two birds with one…never mind).

Sew in Brighton tutors will also be giving up their time to teach beginners how to make bunting – so really you’re killing three birds with one stone. But, if you’re more the ‘pack a kitchen sink’ prepared type, watch this brilliant bunting tutorial here:

UK Greetings Card Brief // Research

It was only when I went to the craft fair in the corn exchange the other day I decided to do the UK Greetings Card Brief.  I saw many beautiful hand-made cards that just have a much nicer quality than shop bought cards.  Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to take any pictures!

So here is a collection of cards I find aesthetically pleasing and inspirational:

This helped to inform my design as I love the use of fabric and sewing here and it inspired me to use felt.

Book Binding Tutorial

I thought this book binding tutorial would come in handy when I come to bind my Hippie Publication.  There are lots of tutorials online but I chose this one because I like the photography used and it is very clear.

The materials used for this little book. Everyone seems to have left-over bits of paper, so rather than toss out, make a book!

Tools used for this project. A paper punch (to create circles), needle, awl, bone folder, bulldog clips, exacto blade, scissors, and a ruler.

Cut and fold paper and cardboard to the size you want the book to be. Burnish the folds with a bone folder.

After scoring the back side of both the front and back covers (about 3/4" from side), clip all pages and covers with bulldog clips. Use some paper to pad the bulldog clips to prevent dents in cardboard.

For a 5"x7" book punch three holes with the awl: one in the centre and one on each end about 1" in.

Using book binding thread or a sturdy cord or ribbon, start stitching. I used a stitch very similar to what I did with wedding albums. It's pretty easy, but you really can come up with many different patterns. Try it out!

Cut out shapes with your scrap paper. We made some simple birds and circles. Glue stick was used to attach cut-outs to cover.

How to Make your own Fabric Journal

DIY Monday: Fabric Journals

Journal DIY headerDIY Monday is back! I am so excited to share with you this simple and super fun idea for covering journals....
Fabric floral Farbric vintagestep 1: choose some fabric that you love! i buy almost all my fabric from etsy.com (search under 'supplies'). i love vintage sheets (like these), cute japanese patterns, and random designer patterns.
Moleskine journalyou'll also need a couple moleskine journals (or any paper covered journal... and of course, you can always DIY your own from scratch if you like). i like large journals with unlined pages for sketching!
Ironstep 2: iron your fabric. you won't want any wrinkles on your book cover. :)
Spray adhesive step 3: trim your fabric so that it's about 1 inch (on all sides) larger than your book. lay it facing down (so that the backside of the fabric is showing). spray your book cover with spray adhesive & wait about 5 seconds for it to dry just a tiny bit (so it's not too wet) and turn your book over so that the cover adheres to the back side of the patterned fabric. next, immediately, close your journal and make sure there are no 'bumps on your fabric... smooth the front and back of the cover with your hands.
IMG_6154(lay your journals under something heavy for about 10 minutes while the glue dries)
Trim edgesstep 4: trim the fabric right up to the edge of your journals.
Scraps(pretty scraps... i thought they needed their own photo.)

Sewing machine step 5: add machine or hand stitching to add extra durability to the edges of your journal. this step is optional!

Batiste Research

For one of my new flavours/ identities for batiste, I was thinking Batiste for Men.  Finding this article helped me to understand that there is an interest in dry shampoo for men.  The bottle design however just looks like the original batiste spray can, If I design a bottle which is more obviously for men then I think more men would buy the product.

Batiste Dry Shampoo - Its also for blokes!

Hi Guys, for years I've watched my girlfriend use Batiste Dry Shampoo and always considered it to be a product for the girls. How wrong I was, there are now two Unisex cans of the cult product 'Fresh' and 'Brit' (Brit being exclusive to Superdrug). Apparently Batiste Original is also very popular with the boys too.

Batiste works by absorbing oil and product build-up in your hair and I was curious to know how effective it would be if you still have product in your hair from the day before. I used the original formula before I went into town to get my hair cut a few days ago and it did exactly what it said on the tin and I was able to go without wearing any of favourite hair paste. I think Batiste its a great substitute when you just don't have the time to wash your hair. It works better without any product in your hair but it's still reasonably effective if you do.

Out of the two, I prefer the Batiste Fresh, it just smells nicer. I want to try out the Batiste Brit now, it looks more Blokey.

Prices do range between £1.49-£3.49 and they're also available in a dinky travel sized bottle as well.

Please let me now your thoughts, any comments are appreciated.

Thanks for reading

The Chap:)
