Lecture 4 - Film Theory 1


The Auteur 

A filmmaker usually the director whose movies are characterized by a filmmaker's creative influence.  

Alfred Hitchcock had a very long career, working in Europe and America.  He was a master of suspense and showed innovation within film making.  His narratives were majorly visual rather than having dialogue.

Blonds are a common feature in his films and they're used because they are viewed as virgins.  "Blonds are like virgin snow."  Another common motif is brids, they represent doom and are featured in 'Psycho,' 'They Lady Vanishes,' and 'Jamaican Inn.'

Hitchcock also collaborated with Salvador Dahli for a dream scene in Spellbound 1945:
